How to Fix the PlayStation 3 When it Will Not Play Sound With a DVD thumbnail
If your PS3 is not playing sound on DVDs, the problem can be easily fixed.

Your PlayStation 3 can play video games, Blu-Rays and regular DVDs. Sometimes your PlayStation 3 will not play sound on a DVD, even if all other functions seem to be working properly. If your PlayStation 3 works in all other areas but will not play sound on a DVD, try some of these troubleshooting methods and fixes before resorting to sending your system for repair.

Instructions

    • 1

Make sure the yellow, white and red composite AV cables are hooked up properly. These are the outlets located on the back of the PS3. The cables need to be hooked from the PS3 into the yellow, white and red plug-ins on your TV (they will be located on either the front or the back of the TV). If an audio cable is loose or not hooked up properly, this could be the cause of the problem.

Try changing the sound output on the PS3 if the AV cables are hooked up properly. Go to the PS3 menu, and under "Settings" select "Sound Settings." Then select "Audio Output Settings." Change the sound settings to 2-channel PCM audio (all devices can decode this and play it back).

    • 3

Suspend playback on the DVD. Without ejecting the disc, load a game demo that you have saved on your PS3. Quit the game demo and resume playback on the DVD.

Tips & Warnings

  • If none of the above options works, it is likely that your PlayStation 3 has a malfunction and will need to be returned or exchanged.
