How to Convert an MP3 to Audiobook
Apple's Audiobook format allows devices such as iPods, iPads and iPhones to discern between audio book files and music files. When you import an audio book CD into iTunes, however, the software will save the transferred files in MP3 format by default. When this occurs, you can alter the format so that the files appear as Audiobook files. This is important for long audio book files, because the Audiobook format always remembers where you last left off.

1
Open iTunes. Select your preferences from menu bar by clicking (iTunes > Preferences) on a Mac, or by clicking (Edit > Preferences) on a Windows computer.
-
2
Select "Import Settings" and choose "AAC Encoder" from the top menu. This enables you to convert your MP3 files into the AAC format, which Apple uses for its Audiobooks. Click "OK" on the "Import Settings" menu and then also on the main "Preferences" menu.

3
Click "Music" in the left column of your main window and locate the file that you want to convert. If you have the file saved in of your iTunes playlists, you can also access it by selecting the appropriate playlist from the left column.
-
4
Click the appropriate MP3 file name to highlight it, and then click (Advanced > Create AAC Version) on your menu bar. The converted version will appear in your music library.
-
5
Drag the new file onto your desktop. By default, it will appear with the extension ".m4a," the default AAC configuration. Apple uses ".m4a" for music files, though. In order for Apple to recognize your file as an Audiobook, change the extension to ".m4b," the Audiobook designation, and then drag the file back into iTunes. You now have an official Audiobook file, and you can find it in your "Audiobooks" library in the left column.
