How to Recharge Soul Gems
Followers of "The Elder Scrolls" video game series are familiar with soul gems, mysterious objects found in chests deep in caves or in the secret areas of homes in the vast expanse of the game. The fourth version of "The Elder Scrolls" -- "Oblivion" -- was released in 2007 and maintained the soul-trapping spells of the third incarnation of the game. Soul gems are needed to use enchanted items in the game, and mastering soul trapping is key to using these items.

Increase your mysticism ability. Each character in "The Elder Scrolls" has a set of attributes and abilities. You increase the level of your abilities by using them regularly, or by reading books that increase the skill. Mysticism spells include dispel, telekinesis, detect life, spell absorption and reflect. Some character classes start with a detect life spell; using it regularly increases your mysticism skill quickly. You must be at least an apprentice of mysticism to buy the soul trap spell.

Visit the Mages Guild in any city to purchase Soul Trap. You can buy spells before you are able to use them, but the Minor Soul Trap spell requires a mysticism skill of at least 25. It will take a while to accumulate 25, so use your other mysticism spells frequently early in the game.

Collect soul gems. Soul gems are found throughout the realm of Oblivion, usually in ruins or in chests in caves. You can even buy soul gems from some traders. Some of the gems you find will have a charge and can be used immediately; others must be filled.

Trap souls. Once your character has reached the Apprentice level in mysticism, you can begin to trap souls. A lesser soul trap spell lasts for a set amount of time, from one to ten seconds. Cast the spell during a battle to mark a target -- the character you've targeted will be outlined in purple if the spell took. Kill the target to capture its soul. If successful, you'll see the message "You have captured a soul." Smaller creatures have smaller souls and can be used to fill minor and petty soul gems.
If the creature you dispatch has a soul too large for a soul gem in your inventory, you'll see the message "There are no soul gems in your inventory large enough to capture the soul."

Buy enchanted items, or level up your mysticism skill, to cast more powerful soul trap spells. The level of your mysticism skill doesn't affect the size of the souls you can capture, only the quality of the soul trap spell. Higher-level spells last longer, so trapping souls is easier (when you have 30 seconds to finish off an enemy, instead of 3 seconds, you can defeat larger enemies). Some enchanted items have a soul trap spell built in, so you can hack and capture in one movement.

Use your soul gems to recharge your items. Open the menu and select your inventory; then scroll down until you find your soul gems. The charge of each soul gem is listed. Press the "Recharge item" button, and then select an enchanted item to apply the gem to.
