How to Disable Factory Alarm

To deter thieves, many cars come with an alarm system. However, many people still choose to install an after-market car alarm or simply disable the factory alarm because they find it too sensitive. It takes only a few minutes to complete the process.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate the alarm box. Typically, this is on the driver's side of the car, under the dash. Factory alarm boxes either have a key, red button or a toggle switch that overrides the alarm.

    • 2

Shut off the alarm from the box. Turn the ignition key forward, but don't start the car. Override the alarm at the box. You should hear the alarm chirp once when you override it.

    • 3

Pull the alarm fuse. Find your car's fuse box -- typically underneath the dash on the driver's side of the car -- and pull the fuse for the alarm. Insert a PIN reader into the slot, so you don't lose any pertinent data. Then, disconnect the negative battery cable, wait at least three minutes, and reconnect the cable.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you plan to install a new alarm system, clean the battery terminals with a cloth and wire brush before you hook up the new alarm. Corrosion on the battery terminals often affects the sensitivity of an alarm.
