How to Rent a Car at 24

Students under 25 often need to rent a car for moving or travel.

There are a variety of reasons that you might need to rent a car. Maybe you are travelling, or need assistance with a move. If you are under 25 years old, there is often a surcharge or deposit required to rent a car. There are also stipulations regarding what you plan on using the car for; sometimes a rental company will only rent to younger drivers if they need the car for business purposes.

Renting Your Vehicle

1. Check with your chosen rental company regarding the requirements for companies that rent to those in your age bracket. An extra deposit or credit check may be required, and not all companies accept cash deposits.

2. Review the terms of your rental agreement regarding other drivers, extra fees for distance travelled, insurance options and weight restrictions. Often these terms are more strict for younger renters.

3. Plan in advance regarding what type of vehicle you need. Most companies restrict the types of vehicles that younger drivers can rent.

Tips & Warnings

• If at all possible, get someone over the age of 24 who has a valid driver's licence to sponsor you when renting a vehicle. If you have been insured on a car before, even if it was your parents' vehicle, have the insurance information handy. If you are with the military or employed by the government, you may have some of these restrictions waived.

• Know the terms of your rental agreement and do not violate them. Some companies do not include insurance for additional drivers, and any altercation that takes place when you are not driving will subject you to severe penalties. Also be aware of your mileage quota if there is one, as you will be charged extra per exceeded mile.
