When framing walls in a basement you will need to estimate the amount of material you will need to complete the project. You will need framing for the interior walls and exterior walls if you want to have a finished basement. This will require taking the proper measurements to ensure that the calculation for the framing is correct. However, you will need to determine where you want to walls to be in your basement.       Measure the length and height for the wall with the tape measure. Make a note of the measurement on a piece of paper.

      Multiply the measurements you noted in step 1 by 12. This will give you the height and length in inches.

      Subtract three inches from the measurement for height of the wall. This will be the length of the wall studs.

    • 4

      Divide the measurement for the length by 16 to determine how many studs you will need for the wall.

    • 5

      Add one additional stud to Step 4 to account for the end of the wall. An additional stud will be needed for each wall that you want to frame.

    • 6

      Repeat this process for each additional wall that you want to frame in your basement.

Tips & Warnings

  • The standard spacing between the studs in a wall is 16 inches.

  • The dimensions of a typical 2-by-4 board are 1 1/2 inches by 3 1/2 inches.
