How to Modify Christmas Lights for Everyday Use
You can use lights to decorate and the inside and outside of your house any time of the year as long as you remove all signs of Christmas. To avoid being labeled as the lazy neighbor who leaves their lights up year round, change out the colors of the lights to reflect the seasonal change and string lights in areas that are usually not considered for Christmas lights. Year-round lights require subtlety in order not to be construed as tacky. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Take colored lights off of trees. Multicolored strands are synonymous with Christmas time, so remove all colored lights from all evergreen trees, house roofs, porches and door frames. Wrap white lights around non-evergreen trees such as such as fruit trees, maple trees or palms to add to your yard decorative lights that don't scream Christmas.
-
2
Replace colored bulbs with white bulbs. As with the outdoor lights, multicolored lights in any part of the home signify Christmas. Remove all colored light strands inside of your home and replace with white strands or one single color. Remove all lights from indoor plants and miniature trees.

Switch out strands with seasonal colors for other holidays. String lights that represent the present season or holiday season such as pastel pinks or yellow for Easter and spring, green and white lights for St. Patrick's Day, red, white and blue for the summer and July Fourth and orange for Halloween and the autumn months.

4
Hang the lights in or around everyday objects, furniture or spaces. Hang lights in unexpected places such as inside of a bookshelf, around a bathroom window, above mirrors, around your young child's bedroom door, over the inside frame of a large door, around outdoor hot tubs, pools, staircases, swing sets and sand boxes, or on the ground lining a path.

Clip attachment covers over the bulbs. You can place attachment covers over individual bulbs on any strand of light to give it a completely new look. Attachment covers come in all shapes, sizes and designs from plastic graduation hats to U.S. flags, chili peppers, wine bottles, pumpkins, bunnies, shamrocks, spiders, hearts and cartoon characters. Other types of attachment covers include soft rubber shapes or paper Chinese lanterns. You can find attachment covers at most party supply stores, home decorating shops, novelty shops and online boutiques.
