1
Pick a theme. You can use things such as sports, hobbies, animals, holidays and art projects to draw inspiration for your cupcake decorations. Think about what kids like--girls often like things such as fairies or butterflies, while boys may be interested in cars or bugs.

2
Draw inspiration from pop culture. You can use movies, TV shows, cartoons, games and toys for inspiration to decorate your cupcakes. Recreate a popular character or use candy with a specific character's face. If you choose a children's character, follow the same color scheme as the character's outfit for your icing and cake.

Use fun accessories such as candy or cookies. Gummy bears, gummy worms, jelly beans, licorice and other candy make perfect decorations on cupcakes for children. Break cookies into halves or quarters to use them as a garnish. Use bright colors to make your cupcakes pop and stay away from the boring and tradition four-color food coloring pack. Red, yellow, green and blue are just the beginning; many companies offer food coloring in shades such as magenta, turquoise, purple, black and brown.

Think outside the box. Transforming cupcakes into other items is an interesting way to make your cupcakes kid-friendly. Use white icing with red decorating gel to create baseballs for boys or make flowers for girls by using lady finger ends for petals and cookie crumbs for a black center. Using all of the cupcakes to create one unified design is also a creative and fun way to decorate cupcakes for kids.
