How to Make Foldable Paper Figures

How to Make Foldable Paper Figures thumbnail
Paper figures are crafting items made out of paper and shaped into things, like people.

Paper figures are miniature models of things made out of paper. They are usually cut out from the paper with scissors in the shapes of people, dolls and animals, and given accessories, like drawn-on hats, for personalization. They can be used as personal entertainment items, decorations for a wall or table and in a model diorama as a substitute for people. Making foldable paper figures requires basic crafting tools.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure out the length of your paper with your ruler. A typical piece of paper is 8.5 inches wide and 11 inches long.

    • 2

Cut your paper out to your desired length with your scissors. Then cut it in half, starting in the middle of its shorter side and finishing in the middle of the other shorter side.

    • 3

Take one of your paper halves. Fold it in half so it lies on top of its other half. Repeat this step. Your piece of paper should now be one-quarter of its original length with four paper folds. Smooth out your piece of paper so that it doesn't unfold itself with your hands.

    • 4

Draw the figure you want on the top of your piece of paper with your pencil. Make sure both of its arms touch the edge of your piece of paper when you're finished drawing.

    • 5

Cut out your figure with your scissors. Make sure you start cutting below the bottom of your piece of paper and cut all the way through all four of your folds along your pencil lines. Remove the cut out paper from around your figure with your hands.

    • 6

Unfold your figure with your hands. You should have four connected figures.

Tips & Warnings

  • To make more connected foldable figures, use a bigger piece of paper and fold it more times. Each fold represents one foldable figure. For example, if your piece of paper has eight folds sitting on top of each other, eight figures will appear when you are finished cutting them out.
