Learn how to shred jeans with a knife.

Shredded jeans can convey an attitude of sartorial rebellion while remaining entirely chic and put together, but along with the style statement comes the fashion price tags. Instead of spending a fortune on designer shredded jeans, you can just take a pair of your favorite, broken in jeans and make them vogue by shredding them yourself with a knife. You will only need a few simple materials that you probably already have in your cabinet and toolbox already.

Things You'll Need

  • Thick plastic card
  • Craft knife
  • Cheese grater
  • Sandpaper

Instructions

    • 1

Lay the jeans flat on the table with the front of the pants facing up. Make sure the seams are straight and even on the side of the legs.

    • 2

Slide the card inside one of the jeans legs right below the pocket of the jeans. The card will protect the back side of the jeans and the table you are working on.

    • 3

Drag the blade of the knife across the leg with the card underneath from the right to the left. The cut should be horizontal and go through the fabric of the jeans.

    • 4

Cut the leg again 2 inches down from the first cut. Keep cutting the jeans until they are as cut as you want and move the card down as you cut so it is always under the knife when you are working.

    • 5

Move the card to the other leg and cut it up the same way. You don't have to make the cuts perfectly even with the other leg because the frays will correct any imperfections.

    • 6

Drag the cheese grater up and down the length of the legs to shred the cuts made by the knife. If the jeans are not as deconstructed as you like, you can rub the sandpaper over the jeans to further fray them.

Tips & Warnings

  • Each time you wash your jeans, the cuts will fray more so you can do minimal cutting and check the results after the first wash.

  • Do not leave any scraps of jeans hanging down where they could trip you up.
