How to Record Cell Calls

How to Record Cell Calls thumbnail
Record phone conversations from your cell phone by using a recorder, or a paid service.

Sometimes you may need a record of cell phone conversations for legal reasons, or so that later you can refer back to what was said. A few phones have the option to record conversations available right in their menus, but most require a voice recorder. The easiest way is to use a speakerphone and set a recorder next to it, but the sound quality likely will suffer. For the best possible sound quality, you should use a method that connects the recorder's microphone to your ear.

Instructions

  1. Speakerphone Method

    • 1

Turn on the speakerphone option while on a call. Most phones have that option on the "in" call menu.

    • 2

Press "Record" on your recorder and set it near the phone. Proceed with the conversation.

    • 3

Stop recording when the conversation is finished.

    Hardware Method

    • 4

Purchase an Olympus Mini Tele-Recording Device. It typically costs about $22 as of December 2010 and is available through online retailers.

    • 5

Insert the lead for the recording device into the recorder's microphone jack, and insert the speaker end into your ear.

    • 6

Press "Record" on the recorder, and it will record both ends of your conversation.

    Using Your Cell Phone

    • 7

Check your phone manual to see if it has the option of recording calls. On phones that have this feature, it is usually accessed through the phone menus when on a call.

    • 8

Press the button that opens the menu and look for a "Record" option.

    • 9

Highlight the "Record" option and hit the "OK" or "Select" button to start recording.

Tips & Warnings

  • Be sure to check the laws regarding recording phone conversations. In the U.S. they vary by state; some require only one person to know the call is recorded, while other states require both parties to be informed.
