Silver is an elegant metal used to create flatware, home decor, jewelry and many other items. When the silver needs to be cleaned, avoid the high-priced chemical silver cleaners found at the grocery store and use a homemade silver cleaner that works just as well instead. By mixing a few household ingredients you can safely clean your silver without use of chemicals or harmful elements. Does this Spark an idea?

Things You'll Need

  • Pan or basin
  • Boiling water
  • Washing soda
  • Aluminum foil
  • Tongs
  • Cleaning rags

Instructions

    • 1

      Place a large sheet of aluminum foil, shiny side up, across the bottom of a skillet or basin.

      Place all of the silver onto the sheet of tin foil.

    • 3

      Pour about 1 gallon boiling water into the skillet or basin, or as much water needed to submerge the silver.

    • 4

      Pour 1/4 cup washing soda into the water, stir slightly and allow the silver to sit for 15 minutes.

    • 5

      Remove the silver with tongs, rinse with warm water, and dry with a cleaning rag to polish the silver and remove the loosened residue.

Tips & Warnings

  • The process may need to be repeated if silver is heavily tarnished.

  • Antique hollow-handled pieces, usually knives, may be damaged by soaking.
