How to Organize a Kindergarten Classroom
On the first day of school for your kindergarten class, some students will be excited, some will be scared and others won't know what to expect. You can create an environment that helps children become the best possible students, in a colorful classroom that is well-organized and a good learning atmosphere.

1
Obtain a classroom roster to determine the number of students you've been assigned. Allow for several more newly enrolled students. Knowing how many students you have will help you organize and arrange the room.
-
2
Arrange your classroom desks in small groups. This type of arrangement allows kindergarten students to learn how to work together in groups. An added bonus is this arrangement is less disruption when you direct students to work in small groups. Walk through the room to ensure there's good walking flow, so students won't have to constantly go around objects to reach their learning destination.

3
Put one large rug in the room for whole group time and smaller rugs for small group activities. Use different colored rugs to help direct students to different small group activities. For instance, you can direct Group 1 to the red carpet for a reading group and Group 2 to the green carpet for science. Rugs help kindergartners to see their group's boundaries.
-
4
Create an area in the room with bins, cubbies or something similar, and label each separate bin with a child's name. This is where each child can keep all his personal items, such as coats, pencils, crayons or artwork. These bins need to be near the ground so the children can reach them. Using bins also teaches a young child a way to stay organized.
-
5
Label the tangible items in the room and all the learning centers. Kindergartners are learning to read. It helps them to hear the words, and to see and feel the items. They can see the written names of the learning centers.
-
6
Create a classroom library, with a wide variety of literature. Put books throughout the room, so students can access them in every area, and provide several reading levels. Change the books regularly. For children to develop a love of reading, they must have books available.
