How to Add a Domain Controller in a Separate Subnet

Network administrators of large networks typically divide the network into separate segments. You can add a Windows domain controller to the domain in a separate subnet using the "dcpromo" command. This command promotes the Windows 2008 server on your subnet to a domain controller. A Windows domain controller is the main server that handles permissions and authenticates users when they log in. Adding a domain controller from a subnet synchronizes with other servers on your network.

Instructions

    • 1

Click the Windows "Start" button on the Windows 2008 computer. Type "dcpromo" (without quotes) into the search text box. Right-click the "dcpromo" text and select "Run as administrator." A wizard window opens. Click "Next" on the first window to start the configurations.

    • 2

Select "Existing Forest" from the options and click "Next." A "forest" is the terminology given to a list of computers and users on a network. Type the existing domain name in the text box on the next window and click "Next."

    • 3

Type the username and password for the existing domain administrator's account. Click "Next" until you reach the "Additional Domain Controller Option" window. Remove the DNS server name in the text box and click "Next."

    • 4

Click "Next" until you reach the "Directory Services Restore Mode Administrator Password" window. Type your server administrator name and click "Next" until you reach the final window. Click "Finish" to complete the settings.
