How to Train a Senegal Parrot to Make Certain Sounds

Senegal parrots are a small parrot breed that are popular as pets. They are sociable birds that are highly trainable, making them the ideal pet parrot for teaching and training specific sounds. Once the parrot picks up the sounds and learns them, the parrot will make the sound often.

Instructions

    • 1

Get the parrot used to the home environment. While the Senegal parrot is known as an affectionate and intelligent parrot, it takes some time for the bird to get used to a new home and family. Avoid rushing the parrot while trying to train and give the parrot time to adjust.

    • 2

Determine what sounds are preferred. For example, if teaching the parrot to talk, pick a word or two like "hello" or "what's up."

    • 3

Repeat the sound or words often in the bird's presence. Constant repetition allows the bird to learn the sound naturally. Have patience when repeating the words. Senegal parrots are intelligent, but it might take time before the bird starts trying out the sounds.

    • 4

Give the bird rewards when it starts mimicking the sounds. When they make sounds that are the same or similar to the preferred sound, give a treat like a piece of their favorite fruit immediately after the sound. This encourages the parrot to make the sound again.
