Instructions

    • 1

Open the book flat and measure the width and height of the open book. Add 1 inch to each measurement and cut two pieces of muslin fabric to the measurement.

    • 2

Place one scrap of velvet or silk fabric right side up in the center of one piece of muslin. Pin a second scrap over the first, right side down, matching one edge.

    • 3

Sew by hand a seam 1/4-inch from the matched edge. Flip the second scrap over and finger-press the seam.

    • 4

Attach more scraps of velvet and silk to the muslin base by the same method until the base is completely covered. Sew on lace, sequins, ribbon and buttons for embellishment. Cut all edges of the scraps to match the muslin base.

    • 5

Place the second piece of muslin over the right side of the book cover. Sew a straight seam around three sides. Turn the work inside out and hand-stitch the fourth side closed.

    • 6

Cut two pieces of muslin to the height of the finished work and one quarter of the width. Hem one short side of each piece. Attach the three unhemmed sides of the muslin to the short ends of the book cover, right sides together with a 1/4-inch seam, to create book-cover pockets.

    • 7

Turn the cover pockets to the inside of the completed book cover.
