How to Tie Duck Decoys
Hunters use decoys to lure ducks within shooting range. While hunters who hunt in fields can simply place decoys on the ground, those who hunt over water must attach a string and weight to their decoys. The decoys float, and the weight sits on the bottom and ensures the decoys do not float away. Hunters can tie the weights and lines to their decoys while they are hunting, but it is easier to do it at home before the season begins.

1
Select a nylon line that is a quarter-inch thick.
-
2
Dip the line in roofing tar. There should be enough tar on the line to cover it with a thin layer. After it dries, the nylon line will be protected, but flexible enough to tie into knots.

3
Attach the end of the line to the decoy. Most commercially-available decoys have a small circular piece on which to tie the line. Attach the line to the decoy using a bowline knot (see Resources).
-
4
Hold a lighter to the tag end of line that extends beyond the knot. Melt the line so it cannot slip through the knot and accidentally come loose.
-
5
Cut the line so there is four to five feet between the knot and the end of the line. Attach a weight to the end of the line. Use a bowline knot to attach the line to a weight. Use a lighter to melt any tag line that extends beyond the knot.
