In order to maintain your yard, installing a drainage pipe is a must do. Installing a drainage pipe will keep water from sitting and attracting bugs and causing a foul odor. If you allow the water to sit, you will also cause erosion and possible seepage into your home, which can lead to mold, mildew and health problems. To avoid this situation, install a drainage pipe that leads the water away from your yard and back into the soil.
Things You'll Need
- Drainage pipe
Call your township manager to ensure that there are no existing ordinances against installing drainage systems on your property.
Dig a trench about 14 inches deep. The trench should extend from the highest point of your yard to the lowest point and empty about 6 to 8 feet from the foundation.
Place 3 inches of gravel at the bottom of the trench.
Lay the pipe on top of the gravel with the holes facing down.
Place an inch of gravel on top of the pipe.
Cover the pipe and trench with sod.
Tips & Warnings
- Do not cover the pipe with dirt. The weight of the dirt is too heavy for the pipe, which may cause the pipe to break and destroy your drainage system and your yard.
