There are over 3,700 private campgrouds in the United States.

RV camping is growing in popularity. Nearly one in 12 U.S. residents who own a vehicle also own some type of RV, according to a 2005 University of Michigan study. You have over 3,700 private campgrounds in America to choose from, but not all campgrounds are created equally. Before checking into a park, peruse publications such as Woodall's, a directory of the highest-rated campgrounds in the country.

Instructions

  1. Moving In

    • 1

Stop your RV in a temporary parking area closest to your campsite. Walk to the parking pad and, using a voltage meter, test the electrical outlet to ensure there is power. Check the water spigot and let it run for a minute to clear out stale water.

    • 2

Maneuver your RV onto the camping pad carefully to avoid any objects such as trees, wires or picnic tables that could block access. Back into your space carefully, while ensuring that you park your RV close to utility connections.

    • 3

Level your RV, using either your RV's built-in automatic leveling mechanisms, or by placing blocks underneath your leveling jacks. Place a wheel chock underneath or between your tires for additional stability, especially if camping in a trailer.

    • 4

Remove your utility connections and connect them to their services. While wearing gloves, attach one end of your sewer hose to your RV, then to the sewer connection. Remove your gloves and do the same with your water hose, turning on the water service after connecting it. Plug your RV's power cord into the electrical outlet.

    • 5

Place any ground coverings, doormat, patio furniture or barbecue grill on the side of the RV where you locate your awning shade. Pull out the awning and lock the fabric and support arms in place.

    • 6

Examine the area outside of your slide outs (if your RV has them), and confirm that your slide out won't hit anything. Activate your slide-out motors, enabling the slides to expand and create more room inside your rig.

    • 7

Turn on your refrigerator, cooking stove and water heater appliances. Grab a cold beverage, step outside and enjoy the view. Your campsite is ready for your relaxing getaway in the great outdoors.

Tips & Warnings

  • When parking your RV in the camping area, show courtesy to your neighbors by ensuring that you don't park your RV too close to their spot.

  • If your campsite doesn't have water or sewer utilities, stop at a waste-water dump station before parking and empty your waste tanks. Then fill your fresh water tanks with enough water to meet your camping needs.

  • Even if your campsite has full hookups, never leave your RV's sewer valves open. Doing so may release unpleasant odors, especially in summer.
