How to Cancel a Bail Bond

How to Cancel a Bail Bond thumbnail
Remove your liability from a bail bond by contacting the issuing company.

A bonding company issues a bail bond to individuals who have recently been incarcerated for misdemeanor or felony charges. A 10% down payment and a co-signer are both required before the bail bond can be issued. The co-signer stands liable for the amount of the bond if the incarcerated individual does not appear for court. In the event the co-signer feels the defendant is at risk for flight, he or she can submit a request to be dismissed of their responsibility from the bail bond.

Instructions

    • 1

Contact the bonding company that issued the bail bond. Set up a time and place to meet to fill out the paperwork. Provide a valid reason for removing yourself as co-signer from the bond. Flight risk, additional criminal charges or the inability to locate the defendant are valid reasons.

Bring your picture ID to the meeting. Fill out the required paperwork completely. Include a detailed explanation of why you are removing yourself from the bail bond.

    • 3

Provide information on the person out on bail. Provide any new descriptions, locations, telephone numbers or employers.

    • 4

Contact the bonding company for a follow-up in seven days. This period gives the bail bondsman time to process the request and remove you from the bail bond.

Tips & Warnings

  • In some cases, you will be required to complete additional paperwork for the courts within the county the bail bond was issued.

  • Removing yourself from someone's bond revokes the bond entirely, and the person will be incarcerated once more.
