How to Install an Antenna on the Mast of a Sailboat
Sailboats are an efficient way to travel. The reliance on wind rather than gasoline provides an almost unlimited source of propulsion. To properly harness that wind the boat needs massive sails, a tall mast and hundreds of feet of lines or rigging. As most boats need an antenna to use a radio, the sailboat provides little place to put it other than on top of the mast away from the lines and sail. Although not a difficult thing to install, advanced planning is necessary.
Things You'll Need
- Antenna
- Coaxial Wire
- Adjustable wrench
- 75-foot wire snake
- Electrical wire
- 2 female antenna connectors

1
Schedule to do the antenna installation when the boat is being serviced and has to have the mast pulled. Typically every year or two or when the bottom needs painted. Measure the length of the mast, then add two feet. This measurement is the amount of coaxial cable you need.

2
Run wire snake up into the mast and route it where you want the cable to run. Once the snake is in place, attach the coaxial wire to the end by folding it into the snake hook and wrapping with electrical tape.

Pull the wire though mast and tape it in place on each end to avoid having it pulled through. Attach antenna fittings to each end. There are many different attachment methods so follow the directions of whichever connector you choose.

Most masts have antenna mounting points in place. Place the antenna in the hole, and thread on the antenna mounting bolt. Tighten it with the adjustable wrench. Attach the wire with the connector to the bottom of the antenna by threading it on clockwise.

Tips & Warnings
Use dielectric grease to prevent corrosion in the connection points.
An antenna can also be mounted with the mast up, however it requires climbing the mast which can be dangerous if done incorrectly.
