A financial analyst looking to further his career might consider sitting for the Chartered Financial Analyst, or CFA, certification. CFA members have the benefit of full membership in the CFA Institute, an international professional society with extensive resources for career advancement. Regular membership of the CFA Institute requires that a financial analyst pass the CFA Level 1 Exam. Full entry as a CFA charter holder occurs after passing the Level 2 and the Level 3 exams as well. In 2009, only 34 percent of the exam candidates for the CFA Level 1 Exam passed. Reviewing before the exam can be the difference between passing and failing.

Instructions

    • 1

Enter the program. The CFA Institute provides a graduate-level, self-study program that is absolutely necessary prior to taking the exam. It covers the body of knowledge that the exam will expect you to have.

    • 2

Practice often using the sample and mock exams available through the CFA Institute. The timing, format and question pool are the same as the real exam, and will allow you to become familiar with it.

    • 3

Hone your knowledge on Investopedia, a website that offers free online study guides, practice tests and a frequently asked questions section. Also, Investopedia provides the opportunity to get answers to questions, in case you cannot locate the answer to a challenging sample question using the study guide.

    • 4

Sleep well the night before. Go to sleep at least an hour before you normally would, to account for any test night jitters. Wake up with enough time to get ready leisurely, and eat a complete breakfast. Removing environmental obstacles ensures that you are in good shape to use your knowledge effectively.
