      Add a 2-inch layer of organic matter to the soil around the lily of the valley plants. Use a large garden rake to mix the soil into the top 8 to 10 inches of garden soil around the plants. Lily of the valley thrives in soil rich in organic matter which drains well.

If your plants are in the ground, plant larger plants, such as daylilies, near them to block out some of the sun's rays. Move potted plants to a covered porch or to an area where the lily of the valleys will receive shade in the afternoon. Lily of the ally plants can survive in full sun, if necessary, but they thrive in areas of partial shade.
