How to Clean Toy Train Tracks
Cleaning toy train track is an integral part of the upkeep and maintenance of any miniature railroad. Clean track enables the train to operate trouble free and at peak efficiency by providing proper electrical contact between the track and the locomotives. Flickering locomotive headlights, hesitation and "dead spots" in the track are common symptoms of dirty track. Cleaning your toy train track is a simple task that requires commonly available tools and supplies. Proper maintenance of the track will keep your train running smoothly for years.

1
Disconnect the power supply to the track by unplugging the transformer from the wall. Remove all trains from the tracks to avoid damaging them. Store the trains in a safe location.
-
2
Rub the top of the track rails gently with an ink eraser or "Brightboy" to remove any corrosion and dirt. A Brightboy is a special-use track cleaning block that is available at many local hobby stores. A standard ink eraser works equally well and is available anywhere office supplies are sold. Use caution around scenery items, such as telephone poles or buildings, to avoid accidentally damaging them.

3
Wipe the top of the rails with an alcohol-moistened cotton or felt cloth to remove any oils or wax buildup. Use only enough alcohol to dampen the cloth without creating drips or runs. Avoid snagging the cloth on the track or scenic accessories.

4
Replace the trains on the tracks and reconnect the power supply.

Tips & Warnings
You can use a standard pencil eraser in place of an ink-type eraser or Brightboy. Be sure to vacuum or brush away the eraser crumbs that a pencil eraser may leave behind.
Never use sandpaper or other abrasives to clean track. The abrasives will leave scratches on the track, which may cause further corrosion or damage the delicate gears of the locomotives.
