How to Make a Spiderman Costume to Look Like the One in the Movies

What little kid (or big kid, for that matter) wouldn't love an authentic Spiderman costume? Well, you can make your little tyke a costume that looks just like the one in the movies. And rather than shelling out for the entire costume, you can do a lot of the work yourself and save a great deal of money.

Instructions

1. Purchase and download a Spiderman sewing pattern. For the most authentic look, find one that has the 3D webbing and muscle shadowing directly on the pattern. A complete pattern with the authentic effects can be purchased at www.spidermancostumediy.com. You can also purchase the pattern from a local fabric store and then scan the images into your computer and add the muscle shadowing and 3D effects using your choice of software. This can be a more cost-effective method for those who are comfortable with adding the effects themselves.

2. Transfer the pattern to a CD, flash drive or other removable USB device.

3. Take the pattern to a dye sublimation company and have them transfer it onto four-way white Lycra. Shop around at a few different stores to find the best price. Also be sure to ask if the dying process shrinks the material. If it does, account for that when you provide the measurements.

4. Sew the pattern together or take the material to a seamstress to have it put together. You will need to sew zippers on both sides of the suit. Begin from the armpit and continue down the side to the belt.

Making the Lenses

1. Clean a piece of soft, bendable, clear plastic. The plastic can come from anything that can be cut to the appropriate size. For example, you could use the plastic case for markers or pencil crayons.

2. Spray the plastic with window-washing liquid.

3. Peel the backing off of a piece of mirrored tint. Be sure to wet the tint as you peel the backing off. You can find tint at most car supply shops or even ask for scraps at an auto detailing shop.

4. Apply the mirrored tint to the plastic and spray with the wind-washing liquid.

5. Wipe away any water using a hard piece of plastic, such as a credit card. Be sure to apply pressure in order to eliminate any bubbles or wrinkles. Allow the plastic to dry for 24 hours.

6. Cut out the shape you want and glue the lens to your costume.
