How to Store a Moped or Scooter in the Winter
Many moped or scooter riders choose to retire their scooter for the winter -- especially if they live in climates that get quite cold or are prone to frequent snow falls. Storing your moped and or scooter properly will help ensure that it runs smoothly when you bring it out of storage. There is more to winterizing your scooter than just putting it in the garage.

Drain the gas tank. The easiest way to do this is by running the moped or scooter until it is empty. This method also empties the carburetor. Spray some WD-40 into the gas tank. This will help prevent rust. Some people may choose to instead fill their tank all the way to the top, add a fuel stabilizer, and sealing off the gas cap to oxygen-proof the tank.

Change the oil. This will help ensure that any debris is flushed out for the winter. Check the tires on the scooter or moped. Make sure they are inflated to the proper pressure for that tire and scooter. Putting a 2 by 4 under the tires will also help keep them off the cold, hard ground during the winter months.

Remove the battery and store it indoors. If the battery is old, just dispose of it. Charge it once a month with a battery tender. Make sure it is stored in a safe place where it won't get bumped or exposed to flames.

Store your moped or scooter indoors -- such as a basement, garage or storage unit. It will be protected from the weather and the possibility of theft. If you must store it outdoors, cover it with a tarp or bike cover. If you want to take rust-prevention measures, cover your exhaust pip with a plastic bag. Secure it with a rubber band or rope.
Do not leave gasoline in your scooter, unless you add fuel stabilizer. It can cause a build-up in the gas tank that is quite difficult and costly to remove. Mice sometimes like to crawl up the exhaust pipe -- so you may want to plug it during storage.
