How to Remove Water From a BlackBerry Curve

Water sports and smart phones don't mix.

Cell phones are taken practically everywhere these days, though there are instances where the delicate technology of a smart phone may not stand up well to use, such as on a wet, sandy beach, in a humid environment like a sauna, or lying on a bar where drinks may get spilled on it. And most of us have heard horror stories of mobiles being dropped into toilets. The best prevention is keeping your phone secure and dry, but if an accident happens, quick action may save your BlackBerry Curve.

Things You'll Need

  • Dry, lint-free towel
  • Uncooked white rice or silica
  • Resealable plastic bag

Instructions

    • 1

Immediately remove your Curve's battery. Do not turn on the device to see whether it works; this can short-circuit your BlackBerry, causing permanent damage. If your BlackBerry was powered on when it got wet, you may turn it off before pulling the battery. If it won't power off, remove the battery anyway.

    • 2

Wipe the device with a towel. Wipe the moisture from all sides and inside the battery compartment.

    • 3

Place your Curve in a bag of uncooked rice or silica. These materials will draw out and absorb moisture. Keep the battery out and the battery door off, placing them in the same bag but separate from the device. Seal the bag shut.

    • 4

Wait at least 72 hours. Do not attempt to power on the device during this time. After three days, check the components for any signs of moisture, and reseal the Curve in the bag of rice and leave it for a couple more days if necessary.

    • 5

Reassemble and test your Curve. Replace the battery and door, and hold the red "End" key for a few seconds to see if it powers on. If the device does not work, you may take it to a professional repair center, file an insurance claim, use an upgrade, buy a device at full retail cost or buy a new or used device from a third party.

Tips & Warnings

  • While a one-year manufacturer's warranty typically does not cover water damage, device insurance --- the kind you pay extra for every month --- may. Review your device's insurance policy. If you return your Curve for replacement under warranty, your claim may be denied if signs of water damage are evident.

  • Do not use a hair dryer, microwave or compressed air to dry your BlackBerry Curve. Heat can destroy your device, and air can drive the moisture farther inside.
