How to Sew Simple Fabric Bags for Gift Bags

How to Sew Simple Fabric Bags for Gift Bags thumbnail
Solve gift-wrapping problems with fabric bags that can be reused.

The shopping-bag style of gift bag has become commonplace, but homemade fabric gift bags can be gifts in themselves. Make a simple flat bag to fit a large gift, and a college student can use it as a laundry bag back at school. A more elegant little bag in metallic mesh or organza becomes a whole-gift bow for a dainty piece of jewelry, a gift certificate or a food treat.

Things You'll Need

  • 1 1/2 yards 36-inch-wide fabric
  • Threaded sewing machine
  • 2 yards drapery cord or 1-inch-wide grosgrain ribbon
  • 1/3 yard metallic mesh or organza
  • Pinking shears
  • 3 yards fine cord or narrow grosgrain
  • Needle and thread

Instructions

  1. Large Gift Duffle

    • 1

Fold the large piece of fabric in half longwise and right sides together. Stitch along two sides, leaving a 1/2-inch seam allowance and stopping 3 inches from the top edge.

    • 2

Turn the bag right-side out. Turn in 1 3/4 inches along the top edge and turn up the last 1/2 inch to form a casing. Stitch around, close to the bottom of the casing and leaving the ends at the side seam open.

    • 3

Thread cord or ribbon through the casing. Insert your gift, draw up the cord and tie it in an attractive knot or bow.

    Jewelry Wrap

    • 4

Cut a 12-inch circle from organza or metallic mesh fabric, using pinking shears to minimize raveling.

    • 5

Work your way around the edge of the circle, tacking cord or ribbon near the edge every couple of inches but leaving it slightly loose between. If you're using a flat ribbon, you can make it spiral around the circle. Cut the end and tack it down when you come back to where you started.

    • 6

Cut the remaining cord or ribbon in half. Thread each half through the loops you made around the edge on one side of the circle. Knot the ends of the cords.

    • 7

Place your gift in the center of the circle. Draw up the cords or ribbons evenly to form a bag. Tie all four ends in an attractive bow on one side.
