How to Teach Parts of Speech in the 4th Grade
Teaching the parts of speech to fourth-grade students can be both fun and challenging. No matter which language you are teaching the parts of speech of, it is important that the students have a grasp on the fundamentals. When your students have begun to learn the very basics, you can begin to make the process more fun and enlightening by adding games and instances where they use the parts of speech in everyday language.

1
Begin by explaining the parts of speech. Group the categories on the board, such as nouns, adverbs, verbs and pronouns. List specific examples underneath each heading so that students get an idea of what each part of speech is.
-
2
Ask students to explain what a verb, noun, adverb and prepositions are in their own words.
-
-
3
Make posters with the parts of speech and examples to put around the room. You can even engage the students by asking them to do it as an art project, making different designs with words inside of them.
-
4
Give the students simple sentences to deconstruct once they've begun to master and identify the parts of speech individually. Sentences can be very simple at first, but as students progress, make the sentences more complex, with more than one noun and verb. Fourth-grade students will appreciate the challenge.

5
Play games with your fourth-grade class. You can use games to get out excess energy and to teach the parts of speech with one activity. Put sentences on the board and divide students into teams. Have each student come to the board and identify one part of speech. The team that can finish labeling the quickest and correctly will win the competition. You can also play games like hangman. When you state which part of speech your word is, the students will begin thinking along those lines also.

Test students when you feel they have mastered the content. This is a way to assess their skills and pinpoint areas of weakness. Tests might include asking students to identify parts of speech in a sentence, giving examples of different parts of speech or a combination of the two. Fourth graders will need something of a moderate level for a test, something not too complex but not too simple.
