How to Get Rid of Indoor Squirrels

How to Get Rid of Indoor Squirrels thumbnail
Squirrels can enter your home through your chimney.

There are several species of squirrels, including the gray squirrel, fox squirrel and red squirrel. All of these squirrels will eat the birdseed from your bird feeders and the vegetables from your garden. Moreover, some of the more daring squirrels will move into attics, where they may chew the wires and wood structures. Fortunately, there are several ways to get rid of indoor squirrels. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Trap the squirrels. Squirrels can be trapped using small steel cages, such as the Havahart Squirrel Trap. Larger squirrel traps are considered inhumane, as they allow the squirrel to run around and become injured. Almost any food will work as bait, including strawberries and peanut butter.

    • 2

Annoy the squirrels. If you are uncomfortable trapping the squirrels, consider using Evictor. Evictor is a high-intensity strobe light that flashes 90 times per second. The light affects the squirrels' sensitive eyes, causing them to vacate in 1 to 2 days.

    • 3

Install a one-way door. A one-way door is attached to the hole that the squirrel is using to enter and exit your home (generally a chewed hole in the attic). The device works in such a way that the squirrel can exit the hole, but cannot re-enter.

    • 4

Seal openings. Once the squirrel has left your home, seal openings to prevent the squirrels from returning. This involves sealing holes in your attic and installing a chimney guard in your chimney.
