With GarageBand, MacBook users can record and edit music and sound files directly on their laptops. Since the GarageBand application comes standard on Macs, you can utilize the computer's built-in mic to record a sound file on a MacBook. Compose your recording in a quiet, sound-proof area to minimize background noise and improve sound quality.

Instructions

    • 1

Double-click the GarageBand icon on your MacBook's dock. If the GarageBand icon isn't located on the dock, navigate to your MacBook's Application folder, then double-click GarageBand.

    • 2

Select the "Voice" option from the dialogue box that opens. Alternatively, you can choose the "Open An Existing File" button to open a previous project.

    • 3

Press the "Record" button at the bottom of the GarageBand program window. The button turns red; your MacBook starts to record from its built-in mic located above the "Esc" button on your keyboard.

    • 4

Press the "Record" button again to stop recording. The button dims when the MacBook isn't recording.

    • 5

Press the "Rewind" button to rewind the recording. Press the "Play" button to playback the recording.

    • 6

Open the "File" menu, then select "Save As" from the drop-down list.

    • 7

Enter a name for the sound file and choose a save location. Click the "Save" button to save the file.
