How to Sew a Coin Purse With a Liner
Coins and other odds and ends always seem to collect at the bottom your handbag or in your pockets. Give your coins a home by sewing a little coin purse to hold them. The purse has a liner to make it more durable and to conceal the raw edges and stitches. Make several coin purses to give to friends and relatives, and to use up any lingering fabric scraps in your collection. If you decide to use a lighter weight cotton, such as quilting cotton, you will want to use interfacing to give the coin purse more body.
Things You'll Need
- Two pieces cotton fabric, 8 by 4 inches in length
- One piece of mid-weight fusible interfacing, 8 by 4 inches in length
- Iron and ironing board
- Straight pins
- Sewing machine
- Matching thread
- Scissors
- Hand sewing needle
- 6-inch zipper
- Zipper foot

1
Place the fusible interfacing on top of the wrong side of one of the fabric pieces. The fusible side should touch the fabric. It does not matter whether you place the interfacing on the outside of the lining fabric.
-
2
Iron the interfacing to the fabric using a medium heat setting.
-
-
3
Place the other piece of fabric on top of the fabric to which you just ironed the interfacing. The right sides of the fabric should face each other. Pin the fabrics together on all four sides.
-
4
Sew around three sides of the fabric with a 3/8-inch seam allowance. Leave one short side open.
-
5
Clip the corners on the fabrics, and turn it right side out. Fold the edges of the un-sewn side under, and hand sew closed.
-
6
Place one short side of the fabric along one side of the zipper. The outside of the fabric should face up. You will have extra zipper length on one end. You will cut the extra off once you have sewn it. Pin the fabric to the zipper.
-
7
Attach a zipper foot to your sewing machine, and stitch the fabric to the zipper. Sew about 1/8-inch away from the zipper's teeth.
-
8
Fold the fabric in half along the long sides, so that the outside fabric faces out and the other short side lines up with the other half of the zipper. Open the zipper and pin the fabric to the other half. Stitch the fabric to the zipper. Trim off the extra length of zipper.
-
9
Turn the coin purse so that the lining faces out. Make sure the zipper is partially open. Pin the two sides of the fabric together, then stitch together with a 3/8-inch seam allowance. Turn the coin purse right side out and fill with coins.
