1
Install a dehumidifier in your basement to maintain low humidity levels. According to the Georgia Division of Public Health, humidity levels should be lower than 60 percent to prevent mold growth; however, the ideal humidity level is between 30 percent and 60 percent.

2
Dry the carpet immediately if water or another liquid is spilt. Place a bath towel on the carpet where the liquid spilt and place either a brick or two heavy books on top of the towel to extract the moisture. Change the towel every five minutes until the moisture is gone.

3
Vacuum the carpet where a liquid was spilt with a dry vacuum or a water-safe vacuum cleaner to extract any remaining moisture.

4
Sprinkle 2 cups of boric acid powder on the carpet at least once a month to kill mold spores or prevent mold spores from adhering to basement carpet. Allow the boric acid to rest on the carpet for 45 minutes. Keep children and pets away, as boric acid can irritate the skin. Vigorously vacuum the carpet to remove the boric acid.

Tips & Warnings
Monitor the basement for condensation from pipes or machinery such as water heaters. If a water spot is located, immediately dry or remove the water-damaged items from the basement.
Keep the basement well-ventilated by opening a window, if available, or running a box fan for several hours per day.
If mold is detected, wear gloves, goggles and a filter mask to prevent mold spores from infiltrating your respiratory system or skin.
