How to Make a Train Costume From a Box
If you or someone you know loves trains, why not dress as one for Halloween or your next costume party? This is a creative, relatively easy, and inexpensive costume that you can create at home in a few short hours. All you need to complete the costume is a conductor's hat and a wooden train whistle and you'll be choo-choo-chooing to your costume party in style!
Things You'll Need

- Colored acrylic paint
- Thick black ribbon
- Hot glue gun

1
Take the medium-sized cardboard box (a little bigger than the torso of the person who will wear it) and cut a square-shaped opening in the middle. The opening should be large enough for the wearer to stand in.
-
2
Spread out newspaper in a well-ventilated area and spray paint the box. Allow the paint to dry.
-
-
3
Use the colored acrylic paints to paint train details on the box. Find a picture of a train online to use as inspiration for the designs you paint on your train.
-
4
Hot glue the two ends of the black ribbons to the underside of the opening. These will make the shoulder straps to wear the box, so they should be glued securely.
-
5
Cut six circles out of the piece of cardboard; these circles should be about 4 inches in diameter or to scale in order to look like the wheels of the train.
-
6
Place the six circles on the newspaper in the same well-ventilated area and spray paint them black with gold centers. Allow the paint to dry.
-
7
Use the hot glue gun to glue the wheels along the lower edge of the body of the train.
-
8
Spray paint an empty oatmeal canister black and hot glue it to the front of the cardboard box to make the train whistle.
-
9
Once the train costume is on, give the wearer a conductor's hat and a wooden train whistle.

Tips & Warnings
If you want your train to be more "human like," consider painting a face on the front of the cardboard box.
Always spray paint in a well-ventilated area such as an outside deck.
