How to Put an Elizabethan Collar on a Dog thumbnail
Your dog may have to wear an Elizabethan collar after surgery.

Elizabethan collars, also known as E collars or Buster collars, can be critical in your dog's recovery from certain surgeries or wounds. The collar, shaped like a lampshade, usually is made out of flexible plastic. It prevents your dog from chewing, biting or licking its wounds. Application of these collars is easy and usually can be done by just one person.

Instructions

    • 1

Run your dog's regular collar through the slits in the smaller end of the E collar, if the collar has slits.

    • 2

      Tell your dog to sit.

    • 3

Slip the collar over the dog's head. If the E collar has slits, buckle the dog's normal collar so it stays in place.

Tips & Warnings

  • Some E collars may be inflatable. In this case, blow up the collar before putting it on your dog. Other E collars may have snap closures. In this case, wrap the E collar around the dog's neck and snap it closed as needed.

  • Only use this collar if your veterinarian recommends it.
