How to Make Burp Cloths Out of Flat Cloth Diapers
A burp cloth is often the difference between nice-looking clothes and clothing headed for the laundry. Burp cloths are a useful gift for new parents or even new grandparents. Grandma is more likely to hold the new baby if she is sure her clothes will stay clean. Since you can customize the fabric weight and color, burp cloths can be stylish, too.
Things You'll Need
- 2 flat cloth diapers (27 x 27 inches each)
- Sewing machine or needle and thread
- Tailor's chalk or fabric marker
Instructions
-
-
1
Measure two 9 by 22-inch rectangles from the flat diapers and cut out both pieces.
-
2
Add a contour (slight tapering) to the pieces, about half-way down the flat diapers. This helps the burp cloth stay on the wearer's shoulder.
-
-
3
Place the two pieces on top of each other with the right sides touching. The wrong side should face you as you sew.
-
4
Zigzag-stitch the two pieces together on three sides. Leave the fourth side un-sewn for now.
-
5
Turn the burp-cloth right-side-out.
-
6
Topstitch (a straight, visible stitch) around all four edges of the burp cloth. Fold in the edges of the open side as you topstitch it closed.

Tips & Warnings
For a thicker burp cloth, use heftier material such as flannel, or add more layers of cloth to the burp cloth.
Use caution when working with a needle and thread or a sewing machine near children and babies.
