How to Use Dewey Cleaning Rods

How to Use Dewey Cleaning Rods thumbnail
Learn how to use a Dewey cleaning rod.

J. Dewey Manufacturing makes cleaning rods and accessories for use with firearms for protection, law enforcement, military use or sport. These rods are sized according to the standard bores of firearms and therefore fit smoothly down the bore for access to areas you would not be able to reach otherwise. The rods have a threaded tip for connecting various attachments for the different stages of cleaning your bore. The bore does need to be separated from the gun in order to use the rods, but the process is quick and simple, so anyone can do it.

Instructions

    • 1

Place one of the patches into a bowl of bore cleaning solvent. Remove the patch when it is wet with solvent.

    • 2

Push the patch through the patch loop and screw the loop onto the end of the Dewey cleaning rod. Make sure there is any even amount of patch on either side of the loop.

    • 3

Insert the patch end of the rod into the bore and push it all the way through. Start from the end where the bullet enters and push to the end where the bullet exits.

    • 4

Pull the patch out of the loop and then pull the rod back through the bore. Never pull patches or brushes backward through the bore.

    • 5

Remove the patch loop from the end of the rod and screw on the brush end. Dip the brush into the solvent and push the rod through the bore in the same direction as the patch.

    • 6

Rotate the brush as you push it through the bore to remove the built-up dirt on the walls of the bore. Unscrew the brush from the end of the rod once it comes out the end of the bore.

    • 7

Put the loop holder back onto the rod and put a dry patch into it. Pass the patch through the bore and remove it when it comes out the end of the bore.

    • 8

Replace the dirty patch that comes out of the bore with a clean patch. Keep passing the rod through the bore with clean patches until the patch comes out of the bore clean.

Tips & Warnings

  • Measure your bore before buying your Dewey cleaning rod and parts to ensure a proper fit.

  • Do not clean your bore when attached to your gun or you will force the dirt into the chamber and workings of the gun.
