Flowers play a big part in Mother's Day celebrations and decorations.

When it comes to setting the table properly (meaning a table where the fork is in the right place along with the glass and dinnerware), most people have been taught the basics. However, making a table not just a place to eat but a place to celebrate is another story. Setting a beautiful table for Mother's Day requires the ability to beautifully arrange table accessories, many of which draw inspiration from the freshly blooming flowers and plants of the season. These extra touches enhance a properly set table, creating a lovely atmosphere for the guest of honor, Mom.

Instructions

    • 1

Arrange for your lunch to take place in the garden. The fragrant blooms of spring offer a lovely backdrop against which to make your Mother's Day meal.

    • 2

Lay down a tablecloth that matches your intended decorating theme. For example, if you've chosen to use the color pink as your main color, put down a pink tablecloth and dress it up with a table runner featuring pink as well.

    • 3

Bring a bit of country charm to the table setting by mixing and matching your plate sets. If you have plates that share a common color, like pink, but otherwise have mismatched patterns, allow the mutual color to be the element that holds the look of the table together. This allows you to introduce a number of different patterns while still creating a pulled-together arrangement.

Set out hurricane glasses of different sizes, and place an assortment of candles inside each to create your centerpieces. Wrap ivy vines and fresh flowers around the bottom of the glasses to give them a spring feel.

    • 5

Wrap up pretty party favors in spring-inspired wrapping paper. Use spring flowers and fancy ribbon to tie the favor together. Place these little gifts on the bread plate at each table setting.

    • 6

Write out name cards and place them in front of the plates. Use stationary with a floral motif or print up homemade cards on your printer.

    • 7

Use your tea set and tea cozy as part of the decorating scheme. A tea cloth that matches the tablecloth brings the tea set into the decorative motif.

    • 8

Use dessert items to decorate the area. Display cookies with spring flowers made of frosting on them, or dip ice cream cones in melted chocolate and cover them with marshmallows, coconut flakes or candy, and turn them upside down onto a chilled plate as if they were candied apples. Serve the cones on the chilled plate.

Keep fans handy so that guests can keep cool. A great way to bring a lady's fan into the decorative motif is to use a clothespin, a ribbon and the tablecloth. Cut the ribbon so it's about 18 inches long. Tie the fan's handle to the ribbon and attach the ribbon to the clothespin. Clip the clothespin onto the hem of the tablecloth.
