Furloughs help inmates achieve correctional goals.

In the State of New Jersey, nonviolent offenders who meet strict furlough guidelines established by the Department of Corrections may leave the institution setting temporarily for supportive services at a halfway house, such as assistance with post-release employment and adjusting to life in the community. The Coalition of Community Correction Providers of New Jersey, Inc. works in conjunction with the Department of Corrections to offer these corrective programs to meet the needs of the inmates.

Instructions

    • 1

Petition the warden or jail official in writing for transfer approval to a halfway house. Request the furlough on an official request form if applicable, or write a formal letter of request.

    • 2

Ask to meet with the warden or jail official in person regarding your furlough request. Be patient while waiting, as this is not a quick process.

    • 3

List your accomplishments before and during incarceration. Also, explain in detail how you will benefit society if allowed the halfway house furlough. Prepare this list while waiting to speak with the warden regarding your furlough.
