How to Replace Head Light Bulbs on a Cavalier

by Leonardo R. Grabkowski

The Chevrolet Cavalier was produced until 2005; prior to that, the Cavalier had not been redesigned since 1995, which makes many repairs and maintenance procedures the same for all models between 1995 and 2005. If the headlights in your Cavalier have burnt out, you can replace them in a snap.

Step 1

Turn your engine off and open the hood. Put on gloves before you begin; touching headlight bulbs with with hands can cause them to burn out.

Step 2

Remove the three fasteners from the plastic shield above the headlight. Pry them up with a flat-head screwdriver. There are three fasteners on each side; if you're replacing both bulbs, remove all six of them.

Step 3

Remove the two bolts mounting the headlight assembly to the vehicle. As the Cavalier manual does not specify the bolt size, keep a socket wrench set handy and match up the bolt a socket head to find the correct size. Lift the assembly up and forward to access the rear.

Step 4

Turn the protective cover counterclockwise to remove it. Press the plastic tab on the electrical module, then disconnect it from the assembly.

Step 5

Pull the old bulb straight out to remove it. Insert the new bulb; make sure it snaps in. Reattach the connection and tighten the protective cover.

Step 6

Set the assembly back into place and tighten the bolts. Repeat the procedure if you want to replace both headlight bulbs. When you are finished, set the plastic shield in place and insert the fasteners to secure it.
