How to Make an African Beaded Necklace
In Uganda, women recycle the paper from old magazines into beautiful rolled beads for jewelry. The Bead for Life charity sells this jewelry and uses the profits to help impoverished women. Though the craft takes practice to perfect, making paper beads is an inexpensive, environmentally friendly hobby. You can wear the bead necklaces yourself, donate them to charity or sell them in an online craft store.

Instructions

1
Pick out some colorful, attractive pages from your magazine.
-
2
Cut long isosceles triangles from the paper.
-
-
3
Take a triangle and place it with the good side down. Place a needle on top of the triangle's base.
-
4
Slowly and tightly wrap the paper around the needle until you reach the triangle's point.
-
5
Dab a small amount of craft glue on the underside of the point, and press it down to secure it in place. This will prevent the triangle from unraveling.
-
6
Repeat this process until you have enough beads to make a necklace.
-
7
Apply varnish to each bead with a small brush to give each one a shiny finish. Wait for the varnish to dry.
-
8
String your beads on a piece of thread or fishing line, and tie a knot to make a necklace.
