How to Unlock Expert Ghosts in Mario Kart for Wii
"Mario Kart Wii" was released for the Nintendo Wii gaming console in 2008. This kart-racing game features some of Nintendo's most popular characters from their Mario Bros. games, including Mario, Donkey Kong, Bowser, Peach, Yoshi and Luigi. One of the challenges in the game is unlocking the expert ghost staff, which places a ghost character on each level of the game in Time Trial mode. Aside from providing you with a fun challenge, unlocking the expert ghost staff also unlocks various characters and extra vehicles.

Insert Mario Kart Wii into your Nintendo Wii and power the system on. From the main menu, navigate to the Time Trial mode.

Select a track and choose to race against the staff ghost. Beat the staff ghost by between three and 10 seconds. The specific time depends on the course. For example, while the Flower Cup course, Mario Circuit, only requires you to beat the ghost staff by four seconds, the Leaf Cup's DK Jungle Parkway requires you to beat the staff ghost by nine seconds. After beating the staff ghost for a given track, you'll be able to race against the expert staff ghost for that track.

Repeat Step 2 for all of Mario Kart Wii's 32 tracks. You'll know you've beaten the normal staff ghost for a track when a faster ghost with a shorter time takes its place.

Tips & Warnings

To help you defeat the normal ghost staff, use the three boost mushrooms provided in Time Trial mode wisely. IGN recommends using them to take advantages of the shortcuts found in many of the levels.
Unlocking four expert staff ghosts will unlock the character Funky Kong, found in many Donkey Kong games. Unlocking eight will unlock Baby Luigi. Unlocking one expert staff ghost unlocks the small kart, Tiny Titan. Unlocking 12 gets you the large bike, Spear, while unlocking 24 expert staff ghosts unlocks the Sprinter medium kart. You can also unlock an alternate outfit for your in-game Mii by unlocking all 32 expert staff ghosts.
After unlocking any characters, vehicles or the Mii costume, you have to reset the Wii or back out of and reload your saved data for the changes to work.
