How to Make Community Helper Hats for Kids

A community helper hat is a great way to make a child feel appreciated within the classroom. You can designate a child the community helper for a day or week, by giving her responsibilities around the classroom such as feeding class pets, making sure areas are clean and helping the teachers and aids distribute handouts and assignments. In order to make the child feel even more special, have her make her own community helper hat.

Instructions

  1. Class Community Helper Hat

    • 1

Measure the child's head around the crown.

    • 2

Draw a rectangle on a piece of construction paper of the child's choice using the circumference of the child's head as the length of the rectangle. The rectangle should be about 4 to 6 inches tall to give the child adequate room to decorate. Have the child cut out the rectangle.

    • 3

Have the child decorate his hat any way he pleases. This can include placing stickers, rhinestones or cutouts of his favorite cartoon characters on the hat, or he can simply draw a picture.

    • 4

Write "Community Helper" somewhere visible on the hat.

    • 5

Make the rectangle into a circle by joining the ends together and stapling them at the back. Place on the child's head for the day.

    Community Helper Tiara

    • 6

Give the child two pipe cleaners and some beads and have her string the beads onto the pipe cleaners.

    • 7

Attach the beaded pipe cleaners to a headband by twisting the wire around it. You and the child can experiment by making different designs or by simply making two arches.

    • 8

Write "Community Helper" on a sticker and place it on top of the tiara.
