How to Create a Marble Look With a Paint Job
A marble surface is attractive to the eye and connotes class and refinement in a way that ordinary materials can not. You can create an imitation (or "faux") finish on a table top that will fool those looking at it to think that the top is composed of marble. A number of supplies must be procured from a hardware store, along with some tools that households might already have on hand but which can be purchased at a minimal cost from the hardware store if necessary. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Place the table whose top will be painted with the faux marble finish in an open area where there is plenty of ventilation. Spray furniture polish on the tabletop. Polish the tabletop with a dry soft cloth.
-
2
Dip the paint brush in the undercoat paint. Paint the tabletop with the paint using long strokes, not circular ones. Continue painting the tabletop until it is completely covered with paint. Let the paint dry for at least six hours. Apply another layer of paint in the same manner as the first. Let the paint dry overnight.

3
Dip an edge of the sponge in the oil paint. Apply a diagonal line along the length of the tabletop with the edge of the sponge. Repeat this procedure to apply diagonal lines along the entire top of the tabletop. Let the paint dry before proceeding.
-
4
Repeat this procedure, covering the diagonal lines on the tabletop with the edge of a sponge, only using a darker oil paint than the one first used.
-
5
Dab the surface of the diagonal lines unevenly with the edge of the sponge to create a natural look. Let the paint dry before proceeding.
-
6
Dip a brush in the translucent glaze. Apply the glaze to the tabletop in long, even strokes until the entire surface has been covered. Let the glaze dry overnight.
-
7
Dip a brush in varnish. Apply the varnish to the tabletop in long, even strokes until the entire surface has been covered. Let the varnish dry overnight.
