How to Clean the Filter In the Water Inlet of a GE Dishwasher

Cleaning its filter at the water-inlet hose keeps a dishwasher running properly.

Many of General Electric's newer GE dishwashers have a built-in filter that is self-cleaning. Older model dishwashers do not have this feature and rely on a filter that is located at the water-inlet hose to remove debris. If this filter becomes clogged or dirty, water flow to the dishwasher can be affected and the dishwasher won't function as well. Cleaning the filter at the water-inlet hose for a GE dishwasher is a simple task that does not take much time.

Things You'll Need

• Standard screwdriver
• Towel
• Dishwashing liquid
• Cleaning sponge

Instructions

1. Turn off the dishwasher and unplug it from the power supply.

2. Locate the kickplate in the rear of the dishwasher and remove the screws holding it in place. The screws are generally near the top or bottom of the kickplate. Locate the water-inlet valve behind the kickplate. It is connected to a hose that feeds water to it.

3. Place a towel underneath the valve to catch any water. Unscrew the water-inlet hose from the valve and remove the filter. The filter looks like a small, mesh basket.

4. Wash the filter with warm, soapy water and a cleaning sponge. Rinse well with water and pat dry.

5. Return the filter to the water-inlet hose and re-attach the hose to the valve. Close the kickplate and replace the screws that hold it in place. Restore power to the dishwasher.
