Instructions

    • 1

Make a vest out of a brown paper grocery bag. The bottom of the bag will be the top of the vest. Cut a slit all the way up the front of the bag and create a hole for your child's head in the bottom of the bag. Cut armholes in the sides of the bag. Make the bag fringed, by cutting small slits to look like fringe around the entire bag. Use brown packing or duct tape to seal the vest's edges, so they will not tear while your child is wearing it. Use brightly-colored construction paper to cut out circles to look like buttons. Draw slogans and peace signs on them using markers.

Find or make a colorful tie-dyed t-shirt for your child to wear with jeans. A plain white t-shirt will work if you can not find a tie-dyed shirt. Pair the shirt with blue jeans, for the base of the costume. Pull on the paper bag vest over the t-shirt.

Accessorize the costume. Find an old tie to use for a funky headband, a pair of round glasses, any necklaces that have peace signs or other 60's symbols on them, then finish the look off with a pair of brown sandals. If you like, use eyeliner to create a large peace sign or flower on your child's face. Girls can braid their hair and boys can leave their hair as is. A long wig could be worn, if desired.
