How to Update Stock Market Reports

How to Update Stock Market Reports thumbnail
Most items on a stock market report must be updated on a daily basis.

The stock market is a system of demand and supply. Demand is a function of the bid price and supply is a function of the ask price. While no two stock reports are a alike, there are certain sections of the report which are common to informative reports such as price updates to major indexes like the Dow Jones Industrial Average and the S&P 500. Other common sections include market volume, highs and lows for the day, and the closing price from the previous day. These are all sections that must be updated daily.

Instructions

    • 1

Update the major indexes. Most stock reports have price changes for major stock indexes, bonds and commodities like the Dow, the 10-year bond, and oil and gold prices. This information is readily available on any investment research site or you can contact your financial adviser for updates. See Resources for an example.

Update the high and low stocks for the day. Some reports list the top companies in terms of a high or low reached during a 52-week performance. Do a search for those companies that have made 52-week highs or lows for the year.

    • 3

Include an update on the three main currency cross exchange rates. The most commonly-traded currency pairs are Great British Pound (GBP)/U.S. Dollar (USD), Euro (EUR)/USD, and USD/Japanese Yen (Yen). Contact your bank or a foreign exchange dealer for daily updates.

    • 4

Update information regarding advancing and declining stocks. Advancing refers to those stocks which increased and declining refers to those stocks which have decreased. "No change" refers to stocks that have had no change in value. Stock reports usually have updates from two different stock exchange houses such as the NYSE, NASDAQ, or the American Stock Exchange.

Provide a quick update on the general sentiment of the market. This is a verbal summary of all updates. Include any relevant economic announcements for today as well as the next business day.
