How to Care for a Capella Plant
The Gold Capella plant is a variety of umbrella tree that is grown mostly as an indoor houseplant in the United States. In the southern portions of Florida and California the tree can be planted outdoors. Instead of the green leaves of the standard umbrella tree, Gold Capella has yellow or gold strips on the leaves. Caring for a Gold Capella tree is similar to caring for other umbrella tree varieties except with regard to light levels. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Place the Gold Capella tree directly next to a window that receives direct sunlight if kept indoors. For outdoor trees, keep the overhanging tree limbs pruned back with a pruning saw or loppers to allow direct or partial sunlight to hit the plant.
-
2
Fill a shallow dish with a single layer of small stones and set the Gold Capella pot on top of it to catch the excess water that runs out of the pot.
-
-
3
Water the soil at least twice per week or more to keep the soil constantly moist but not soggy. If you see leaves with black areas, reduce watering. If you see leaves that have a wrinkled or wilted appearance, increase watering.
-
4
Apply a balanced, liquid fertilizer, such as 10-10-10, to the soil once per month starting in spring and continuing through the summer months. The numbers indicate the percentages of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium in the fertilizer.
-
5
Examine the tree regularly for signs of small spider webs which are the result of a spider mite infestation. Spray the leaves with a non-toxic insecticidal soap to kill the insects.
-
6
Prune the Gold Capella plant any time of year. Look for limbs that do not have any leaves and cut them off as close to the main trunk as possible with a pruning saw. Then trim back the tips of any branches that hang over into walkways using hand pruners.
