How to Fix a Clogged Kitchen Sink With Salt and Baking Soda

Save

A clogged kitchen sink is an inconvenience, but it's something that happens to nearly anyone who regularly cooks in the kitchen. Over time, grease and bits of food from your dishes, pots and pans will build up in the drain regardless of how clean you try to keep it. While you can purchase commercial drain-cleaning products, many of them contain harsh chemicals that some people would rather not use in their homes. Instead of pouring a chemical cocktail down your kitchen sink, you can use a cleaning solution made with nontoxic ingredients you probably have in your pantry.

Things You'll Need

  • 1 cup baking soda
  • 1 cup salt
  • Bucket
  • 1 cup white vinegar
  • Large stock pot
  • 2 qt. water
  • Pour 1 cup of baking soda and 1 cup of salt into a bucket and stir the ingredients together.

  • Add 1 cup of white vinegar to the bucket. The mixture will begin to foam.

  • Pour the foaming mixture into the clogged kitchen drain immediately.

  • Fill a large stock pot with approximately 2 qt. of water and bring it to a boil on your stove.

  • Pour the boiling water directly into the drain approximately 15 minutes after you add the foaming vinegar and baking soda mixture.
