How to Make Leak-Proof Cloth Diapers

Cloth diapers can be made leak-resistant with some care and consideration.

Cloth diapers are a more traditional and a cheaper route to helping keep your baby diapered until potty training is complete. However, cloth diapers are not as absorbent as many disposable diapers, so you're going to need to take some extra steps if you want to make these diapers leak-proof to stop messes from spilling over or slipping out of your baby's diaper.

Instructions

    • 1

Make sure that your baby is clean, moisturized and powdered. This is important for reducing rash and for keeping your baby's skin healthy.

    • 2

Wrap a cloth diaper around your baby's middle and keep it snug. You want the baby to have freedom of movement, but you also want to make sure that the cloth diaper doesn't leave gaps for the mess to leak out of. If you use a second layer of cloth, it can provide for additional absorption as well. Pin the cloth diaper and the second one, if you're using a second, in place.

    • 3

Slip a leak-proof cloth cover over the actual diaper. These covers are made of cloth that's been treated to keep it breathable as well as waterproof. These covers go on similar to a diaper, but they have hook-and-loop tape or snaps to hold them in place.
